Observations
Exterior anatomy of the eye
Insert your photograph of the exterior of the intact eye here. Include labels that identify the optic nerve, the sclera, and the cornea, and a caption describing this view of the eye.

Disected eye
Insert your photograph of the two halves of the sectioned eye here. Include labels that identify the vitreous humor, lens, cornea, iris, retina, ora serrata, and optic disc (blind spot), and a caption describing this view of the eye.

Questions
- In age-related macular degeneration, afflicted individuals may experience a blurred area near the center of their vision. Based on what you have learned about the function of the macula, explain this symptom.
- What anatomical feature gives cows better night vision than humans? Is there any way other than dissection that you could determine whether an animal has this feature?
Module 5 Assignment: Research and Report
Overview
In this final assignment for this module, take into consideration the integrative function of the nervous system. The nervous system works as a whole in combination with the rest of the body. Your challenge is to use what you have explored in this module to clearly explain the peripheral and autonomic nervous systems. In addition to understanding the structures and functions, you have to tell us how an imbalance between the systems can create problems or failures in the body.
You should spend approximately 3.5 hours on this assignment.
Instructions
- Prepare a written paper to Dr. Jake Smith of at least 500 words that includes the following:
- What is the relationship between the central and peripheral nervous systems and the sensory organs?
- Trace the pathway (including diagrams and labels) between the brain and one of the main sensory organs in the head.
- How does the autonomic nervous system help to maintain homeostasis in the body?
- Can you provide an example of a disease that is a result of autonomic nervous system imbalances? Explain.
- This is your final research and report. In addition to the 500-word report, include in your final research and report a reflection that discusses the following:
- What is the most important takeaway you have from this course that will inform you as a future medical professional? Explain why.
- What was one concept, topic, or system you found challenging to learn, and how did you overcome this challenge or how do you plan to address this challenge in future courses?
- Your paper should be formatted as a proper research paper with an introduction and conclusion. Do not simply follow the bullet points above, but really think about what you have learned and how that relates to other material we have covered, and knowledge you have from other courses you may have taken.
- All references must be cited using APA Style format.
PROJECT PRESENTATION (MODULE 5)
- Create a presentation on your chosen organ that includes the following:
- Name of the system
- Name of the organ
- Anatomical location: Use directional terms to describe the location such as superior to, inferior to, anterior, etc.
- Anatomical description: Include only the anatomical description; do not include any function or microscopic description.
- Types of cells and tissues present in the organ: Just include a microscopic description; do not include anything else.
- Functions of the organ: This is to describe the physiology. Do not discuss any anatomical description.
- Homeostasis: Discuss how the organ you have chosen responds to maintain homeostasis in the body.
- Prediction: Predict the types of problems that would occur in this organ if it could not maintain homeostasis.
- Disease: Mention a specific disease that affects the organ, and describe the anatomical and functional changes that occur in that organ.
- There is no research paper to do as part of your final presentation (you will still have your Module 5 Research and Report assignment due. At the end of the semester, you will submit your PowerPoint (or other presentation) along with descriptive content. The descriptive content could be an audio included in the PowerPoint, a video presentation in which you describe your slides, or a supplemental script or notes pages for each slide. The reasoning is that if you were doing a presentation to an audience, you wouldn’t put all of your content in bullet points on the slide. The bullet points would highlight the important parts, and you would verbally elaborate in your presentation.
- References: Provide at least five references using APA Style.
