M1 Discussion: Ethical Issues in Child and Adolescent Counseling
Counseling children and adolescents involves a variety of unique ethical issues that must be understood and addressed at all times. These involve things like informed consent, confidentiality, family conflicts, and many more.
After reading the Koocher article and the content guides, please develop a main response in which you address the following questions and discussion prompts:
Summarize the main ethical issues that differentiate child and adolescent counseling from adult counseling.
Use what you have learned from the child development readings to discuss how development impacts ethical issues in child and adolescent counseling.
Choose one of the brief case examples provided in the Koocher article and describe your reaction to it. What is especially difficult about this example? Do you agree with the author’s recommendations regarding how to respond to this situation? Why or why not?
If you were to face an ethical dilemma (a situation involving two or more competing ethical principles that required you to respond in the most ethical manner) while counseling a child or adolescent, what tools and resources would you use to help you?
Reflecting on your own personal values, attitudes, and beliefs, what ethical aspects of child and adolescent counseling would you find most challenging?
How are cultural issues (race, ethnicity, gender identity, etc.) related to professional ethics when counseling children and adolescents?
In addition to your main response, you will also need to reply to the main responses of at least two other students. In your replies, you may wish to include:
Follow up questions
Connections to your own relevant views and experiences
Your primary or main post is expected by midweek of the discussion and must address all the question(s), be adequately detailed, and cite outside sources. To get at least minimal credit for this discussion, you must also reply to the main posts of at least two (2) other students with thoughtful and relevant comments and/or questions. Additional relevant replies are strongly encouraged to improve your learning and discussion grade.
