Conformity & Rebellion in Poetry

Over the last few weeks, we have been exploring the very different ways that writers have addressed the themes of conformity &

rebellion in poetry and music. Now you will apply this process to a poem of your choice.

Choose a poem from the Conformity and Rebellion unit; it may be one we read together or another of your choice. Annotate and

contemplate! Be sure to consider how the poet uses the elements of poetry to convey theme. You should definitely be specific and note

quotes and/or page numbers.

Then, consider how your poem connects to another poem, short story, or song. Connections may include genre, theme, literary techniques,

historical time period, and/ or subject matter.

Conduct some research to see what other readers and critics think about your chosen works and ideas.

Plan, draft, and polish an essay in which you consider how the author of your choice uses literary elements to convey the themes of

Conformity & Rebellion and connect to another literary work. You should use textual references and quotations to support your

assertions. Be sure to cite at least two secondary sources, one of which may be our text.
