Sport in Society: Issues and Controversies

Student Discussion Worksheet ANALYSIS 2

Reading: Ch. 2, “Using Social Theories: How Can They Help Us Study Sports in Society?”

As we analyze the sociology of sports, we need to understand the major theories that impact sports and how we can use them to our advantage (while being considerate of others).

One of the anticipated outcomes is that you will learn how to make a shift in terms of definition or perception in order to acquire access to greater resources (i.e. get more money).

You will apply your own experiences to your understanding of the reading in order craft your response.

You will write this exercise as if you are a sport manager making a pitch to support your position.  Consequently, you will write it in business memo format.

Remember to be SEXI in your responses (i.e. State. Elaborate eXemplify. Illustrate)

Remember to utilize the Elements of Thought while applying the Standards of Thinking.

It has been announced that a new three-rink ice arena will be built in your town. It will be funded through a combination of public, private, and foundation money. The vote was 4 – 3 in favor of the arena.  You have been hired by a civic group to do a study of how the decision was made to devote resources to this project rather than other projects that might benefit the community.

Which theoretical framework would you use to guide your study? Give at least two (2) reasons for choosing this framework.

The three people on the committee who voted against the arena are as follows:

  • One analyzes sports in terms of the interactionist theory
  • One uses structural theory
  • One uses critical feminist theory

List at least one recommendation that you would make to appease (i.e. make them happy) each person who had voted AGAINST the arena.

  (Please complete below.)

Sport in Society: Issues and Controversies

Student Discussion Worksheet CRITICAL ANALYSIS 3

Reading: Ch. 3, “Sports and Socialization: Who Plays and What Happens to Them?”

In order to be an effective sport manager, you need to understand WHY people get involved in sports as well as what happens to them once they become involved (including if they get out).

Illustrate)

Be sure that you hit all of the Elements of Thought as well as apply the Standards of Thinking.

Ask two people who regularly play in power and performance sports to describe their experiences in sports. Then ask two people who regularly play in pleasure and participation sports to describe their experiences. Identify any similarities or differences in the descriptions of their experiences.

Pleasure & Participation 1

(Person C)

Why did they get involved?

Like the most about sport?

Hate the most about sport?

Using your limited data, pretend that you are the athletic director of a new private school with a student body of fewer than 600 students. The parents and teachers want to discuss with you whether the new sports program will emphasize power and performance sports or pleasure and participation sports. You plan to identify the pros and cons of each alternative from the perspective of the students’ overall educational experience. Create a handout (or flyer or brochure or memo) that does that.

Sport in Society: Issues and Controversies

Student Discussion Worksheet CRITICAL ANALYSIS 7

Reading: Ch. 7, “Gender and Sport: Does Equity Require Ideological Changes?”

In order to be an effective sport manager as well as ensure compliance with the law, you need to understand gender issues, their impact on people who participate in sports, and ways of accommodating gender issues that do not lead to discrimination accusations.

You will apply your own experiences to your understanding of the reading in order craft your response.

You will write this exercise as if you are a sport manager making a pitch to support your recommendations.  Consequently, you will write it in business memo format.

Remember to be SEXI in your responses (i.e. State. Elaborate eXemplify. Illustrate)

Be sure that you hit all of the Elements of Thought as well as apply the Standards of Thinking.

You have just been appointed as a chairperson of a special committee charged with studying gender equity in Emperor University’s sport programs. You must develop a research design and present it to the rest of the committee members.

  • Outline the kinds of data you will collect to assess whether equity has been achieved.
  • What do you expect to find at your university?
  • Do you think your school could meet the legal definition of equity as spelled out in connection with Title IX? Think of the three (3) Title IX tests.
  • How would the school meet the definition or fail to meet it?
  • What could you do change the situation and (1) ensure that your school complies with the law as well as (2) encourage greater movement toward gender equity?
