Creating a Diversity Portrait

Part 1: Data Collection

Directions:

  • Examine data from the School Report Card, the School Improvement Plan, and other resources to identify a student group experiencing an achievement gap when group data are compared to state averages.
  • Create the data collection table in the Word or text document to develop a demographic portrait of the student group.
  • Use Excel or another spreadsheet program to create a graph illustrating this portrait. Include the graph in your assignment document. Tutorials for using the program are available: Digital Learning Connections Resources and Tips
  • Answer each of the two questions following the table in well-developed paragraphs
  1. Incorporate the data you collected into a written description of the student group.
  2. Based on your data analysis, what achievement gaps exist between the performance of the group at your school and state averages? Which achievement gap do you plan to address in your Module 3 Application? Explain your choice.

Part 2: Historical Perspective

Directions:

  • Use the Internet or other sources to research documented historical evidence of bias or lack of cultural understanding regarding the selected student group. Follow APA (6th edition) format in this portion of the assignment, and include a references page at the end of the assignment document.
  • Compose a minimum 1-page response describing the historical experience of the selected student group.
