The Health Belief Model (HBM) is a theory that suggests that a person’s belief in a personal threat of an illness or disease together with a person’s belief in the effectiveness of the recommended health behavior or action will predict the likelihood the person will adopt the behavior (LaMorte, 2016). The HBM can be a beneficial tool when educating a patient in relation to their lifestyle choices. Some things must happen, in order for the implementation of this theory to be successful.
First, the nurse must assess their personal notions in respect to the situation and behavior and place those feelings aside. The nurse must also be aware of their motivation and amount of energy they are willing to bring into the educational investment of the patient. In respect to the patient, the nurse must determine the patient’s preconceived willingness to make changes. It is vital to consider what beliefs the patient may already have regarding changes to their lifestyle.
The patient’s perception may have already been molded by factors such as genetic risk factors, emotional and financial stability, self care ability, and their personal support system or lack thereof. By understanding that each patient has a unique set of circumstances that can alter their foundation for learning the nurse can increase the patient’s motivation to change and prevent them from falling off the wagon. By identifying the risk factors that have lead to past failures and non-compliance, the nurse can develop a more individualized plan that is more realistic for each patient.
