Literature Review
Choose a segment from Canadian society (current) (segments are identifiable demographic, psychographic, geographic parts of society) and identify and discuss one (recent) trend relevant to that segment.
How will you discover a trend?
You will perform a literature review*, then draw conclusions from this information, and hypothesize** how a trend in the segment will (or likely) affect future Canadian social policies***. You must pick your primary literature from the following site:
You must have a minimum of three references (literature reviews) specific to the segment and the trend. You will draw your conclusions about the trend from this content.
- A literature review is a body of text that aims to review the critical points of current knowledge, including substantive findings as well as theoretical and methodological contributions, to a particular topic. Literature reviews are secondary sources, and as such, do not report any new or original experimental work. Its goal is to bring the reader up to date with current literature on a topic.
- From this body of text that you have compiled, you are asked to draw conclusions about a trend, and then hypothesize (offer or propose explanations based on your conclusions) how trends in the segment are affecting or will affect future Canadian social policies. •

An example follows ADV116 Essay: Assignment Example (This is an example of the format and content.)
Trend: Younger generations wanting a better work/life balance. (Story title from globe and mail) Segment: This is a demographic segment of … (ex. 25-49 years olds)
Hypothesis: This trend has the capability to enact change within the existing work/employment environment to accommodate children’s care centres either within the business facility or very close by.
The likelihood of government involvement would be subsidies in the form of tax relief benefits for those employers who provide child care of this nature for their employees. This hypothesis of private child care with tax relief benefits is based on the government’s past role as child care providers. The negatives associated with this are higher costs and services not as comprehensive as those provided by privately run businesses.
On a personal basis, this trend would not affect me personally as I’m not in the demographic. However, if the tax relief benefits the businesses would be offered to counter the costs of onsite child care are substantial, it is conceivable, based on historical actions whereby taxes from other sources (such as purchases or property) are increased to make up for deficits, that all taxpayers would experience the negative impact of these actions.
The following literature reviews support this: (Here YOU include a summary of the parts of the articles that are relevant to YOUR ‘essay’ part. Do not include the entire article. THESE ARE TO BE SUMMERIZED IN YOU OWN WORDS…YOU MAY QUOTE..DO NOT PLAGIARIZE)
1 When Ritchie Brothers, an auctioneer business in Burnaby BC, planned its move from Richmond to Burnaby, it sent out extensive surveys asking staff what they wanted at the new company headquarters. One overwhelming request was on-site child care. The company ultimately chose to build and operate the children’s centre themselves, rather than outsource the operation as many companies do. The result is a parent’s (not to mention a child’s) dream: 5500 square feet of teeny child-sized tables, chairs, cubbies, washroom stalls, developmental toys, arts and crafts supplies, books and more – almost all made with natural materials, with very little plastic in sight. Outdoors, there is a play area with slides, ride-on toys and an enormous sandbox. The centre is open 7:30am to 5:30pm. Three rooms serve up to 49 children. The centre also operates as a day camp during the summer and on school holidays. Employees pay a subsidized rate. When Ritchie’s new facility held its open-house more than one employee walking through the centre was heard telling their partner, “Okay, we can have that baby now.” (List the source – ie. 2 For an idea of current child care trends, to understand the possible magnitude this may have, a summary from StatsCan identifies the type of child care and how it varies according to the child’s demographic background. The use of certain types of care differed with respect to a number of circumstances, including the community in which the child lives, the income level of the child’s family, and the parental place of birth.
For example, just over 1/5 or 22% of children in care in rural communities were cared for outside of the home by a relative, compared with 16% of children from urban communities. This supports the prospect that for a better work/life balance, child care within the company where a parent works would add considerably to the quality of the balance between the two. The article goes on to state that 30% of urban children were enrolled in day care, with 40% of those from higher income households. .” (List the source)
