Informative Speech Assignment Learning Objectives:
- To refine your organization, research, and delivery skills
- To locate, read, and summarize credible research
- To learn to construct a preparation outline, to properly cite reference sources in a research document, and to create a proper APA reference page
Assignment Description:
The purpose of this speech is for you to inform your audience about a famous inventor and his or her invention(s). Your inventor could have invented something recently or hundreds of years ago. An inventor is someone creates a unique device, method, or composition. An invention may be an improvement upon a machine or product, as well as, a new process for creating an object or result. The informative speech gives you an opportunity to research a person of interest and share with the class your newfound knowledge. In this assignment, a few questions you may want to consider answering for your audience could include:
- How did the inventor discover or create his or her invention?
- What problem did the invention solve?
- What was your inventor’s life like?
- Was this person famous during his or her time?
- Did the inventor profit from his or her idea?
- How did his or her invention impact society and change the lives of others?
- Do we still use this invention today or is it out dated?
When constructing your speech, be sure to organize your information, so that you can enhance the class’s understanding of your topic in the allotted time. DO NOT give your audience common surface information, such as an encyclopedia entry. Instead, narrow your focus and offer specific details about the event and person. Elaborate and explore your topic. Strive to provide your audience with new information they have not heard before. One critical aspect of this speech is to relate a topic that you know about to an audience that might be ‘in the dark.” Be careful not to use lingo or jargon to an audience who may know nothing about your subject. In summary, you will need to uncover credible relevant research about an event or labor organizer you have chosen, construct an organized outline, and deliver a competent speech.
