This week’s lesson focuses on two concepts, the dual court system and corrections. The dual court system is the separation of the state and federal courts.
You will find that on the state level, no two states have the exact same court structure as states are independent of each other and control their structure, tiers, and jurisdictions. The federal court system is consistent throughout the United States.
The three-tiered federal system comprises the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals, and U.S. District Courts. You will read more specifics on each court in the lesson and readings. The correctional system can vary from state to state.
The Federal Prison System is consistent across the country. You can search your own state’s corrections history. Be sure to examine what types of inmates they house, disciplinary actions they can take, number of inmates, and changes or innovations your state has taken to deal with the prison population.
