Midterm Topic Choices

Choose ONE of the following topics and write a 750-word essay.

1. After studying “The Middle Passage” from Olaudah Equiano’s autobiography, comment on the lack of communication between the captured Africans and the crew of the ship. Be sure to mention the emphasis on the Africans’ wish to die rather than live in slavery and the details Olaudah chooses in describing the journey that might explain the reason for their wishes. Include specific quotes from the reading to support your ideas.

2. Look at Chaucer and Malory. Apply the idea of historical-biographical critique to each reading, making sure to note both what is happening in the writer’s personal life AND the world in which the writer lived. Be sure to use quotes from the work and the biography showing the connections you discuss.

3. Choose any song you wish (contemporary is fine). Using AT LEAST one verse and the refrain, discuss the lyrics in terms of poetry. Be SURE to discuss the content (story) and poetic components such as alliteration, simile, metaphor, personification, rhyme scheme, and imagery (symbolic or literal). Be sure to use examples from the song. Cite the song and all quotes using APA format.
