Brachial Plexus

Brachial Plexus

Choose ONE of the areas below and outline the muscles and areas of sensation that would be impacted by damage to the brachial plexus at

that level, and how the functional loss would present:
1. Lateral Cord
2. Inferior Trunk
3. C5 Nerve Root
4. Median Nerve
For example: “A patient with injury at the area of the Axillary Nerve would present with weak or paralyzed Deltoid and Teres Minor, as

well as loss of sensation to the mid-lateral shoulder region, often described as the area of shoulder sleeve insignia as worn by many

service members. Functionally, the largest loss would be in shoulder abduction movements, since there are other muscles that would

substitute easily for shoulder flexion and extension, as well as shoulder external rotation. The other functional difficulty that may be

noted is discomfort with side-lying on that arm, with sensory changes, and shoulder instability due to loss of a part of the Rotator Cuff

and the support of the Deltoid to that glenohumeral joint.”
