Essay Assignment Instructions & Grading Criteria
Instructions:
- Address the following:
- Several key historical events are relevant to Celia’s story, including legislation like the Missouri Compromise, Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the Dred Scott decision. Why is the political backdrop to Celia’s case so fundamental to our understanding of her life? How does Celia’s case enhance our understanding of American history?
- The essay instructions are as follows:
- The question must be answered in essay form.
- The assignment must be typed in Times New Roman 12-pt font with standard margins. (*This assignment sheet is written in the required font.*)
- The essay must be single-spaced and contain no less than 1000 words.
- In the bottom right-hand portion of the page, at the end of the assignment, type the total word count. (ex. Word Count: 1000)
- Be sure to include information from the chapter readings, videos, and the documents in the Source Collection of the REVEL text to support your answer. No outside sources are necessary.
- DO NOT COPY DIRECTLY FROM ANY OF THE SOURCES THAT YOU USE. ESSAYS WILL BE CHECKED FOR PLAGIARISM.
- Students are required to submit essays using the Turn-It-In application. Essays must be submitted by uploading them into the Turn-It-In application in the Assignments section by the due date. I would strongly suggest that you use Microsoft Word. In my experience, Word just appears to work better with Turn-It-In.
- Find Essay Assignment in the Course Content Section.
- Click “View/Complete”.
- Click “Submit”
- Enter a name under “Submission Title”
- Browse for your file.
- Click “”
- The application will then take you through a number of screens to confirm your submission and there will be an option to print a confirmation. KEEP A RECORD OF YOUR SUBMISSION!!!
Grading Criteria:
Essays will be graded according to the following criteria.
- Quality of Information/Content (60%)
- How well does the student demonstrate an understanding of course material?
- How well does the student utilize examples from the required sources?
- Organization (20%)
- Is the information presented in a logical order?
- How well is the reader able to follow and understand the information that is being presented?
- Spelling/Grammar (10%)
- Are there numerous spelling and/or grammatical errors?
- How much do those errors affect the readability of the essay?
- Adherence to Guidelines (10%)
- How well did the student follow all of the instructions that were given?
