LEVI’S CASE
Levi is a 35-year-old man who is HIV positive. He works as an auto mechanic. Since learning that he was HIV positive 10 years ago, Levi has been on medications that have stopped the progression to AIDS, and Levi is fairly healthy. However, the emotional toll has been much more serious. Levi has withdrawn from most social interactions. He has not told anyone in his family, and has fallen away from most of his friends. He has been able to obtain a variety of medications for anxiety, and often takes more than the prescribed dosage. In addition, he has had a cocaine habit that he views as his one area of excitement in life. His pattern of use is on weekends, or sometimes as a pick-me-up to get to work. He tends to use the anti-anxiety medications in the evening to help him relax and sleep. He sees his life slipping away in what has come to feel like an increasingly empty lifestyle. He calls a counselor to talk about his problems.
TOMMY’S CASE: Social Work and Human Services Homework Help
Tommy, a 22-year-old, has just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. During his time there, he was nearly killed by an IED that destroyed his vehicle and killed two others. Tommy was in the hospital for a concussion after the accident, and was never able to return to his unit. He is married and has a two-year-old daughter. Since returning, Tommy has been going to bars during the day and often drinking until passing out at home during the evenings. His wife, Angie, is extremely alarmed, not only for Tommy but for herself and their child, as Tommy gets very angry at times.
ANDREA’S CASE
Andrea is a 17-year-old Hispanic in the U.S. illegally. She crossed the Mexican border with her mother last year. Mama is finding sporadic work. At times Andrea has been able to work with her mother. However, there are many days when Andrea is left by herself in the rundown building where they live with other illegals. Andrea got involved with a young man who also lives in the building and now she is pregnant. She doesn’t want the baby, but her mother is a strict Catholic and Andrea knows she won’t condone an abortion. She has come to you for help.
HOFSA’S CASE
Hofsa is a 24-year old Muslim woman from Somalia. She was able to relocate to the United States when she was 18; she has been living on her own, taking college courses and working since that time. Recently her family has been able to come to the United States and they have joined her in Minneapolis. Her family has had a traumatic time in Somalia, and are having trouble assimilating in the US. They expect Hofsa to work and support them, and always be available to take them where they want to go, to serve as an interpreter, etc. Since Hofsa has been in the States, she is less strict about following the strict, traditional Muslim guidelines that her family practices and this is a constant source of conflict within the family. To make matters even worse, Hofsa has fallen in love with another Somali refugee; the problem is that he is from a tribe in Somalia that Hofsa’s family considers an enemy tribe.

Social Work and Human Services Case Study
Anna is a family child-care provider in the community. She cares for her own toddler and two other children whose parents have full-time jobs. Anna has started to use the programs offered by the local Family Place. Twice a week she takes all three children to the drop-in play program at the Family Place. While she is there, she participates in a caregiver’s support group that is facilitated by one of the paid staff.
Anna is currently caring for a four-year old girl, Marisol, whose parents recently arrived as immigrants from Central America. Marisol is very quiet and withdrawn. Sue, the early childhood educator in the drop-in program, suggests to Anna that Marisol really needs some intensive counseling and/or play therapy.
Anna and Sue know that they cannot provide this level of service. They feel that the Child Welfare Ministry responsible for child day care (which is the same Ministry responsible for child protection) should be approached to provide additional supports at the Family Place and in Anna’s family child care program. Anna speaks to Marisol’s mother, Juanita, who is very concerned about her child. She wants what’s best, but she doesn’t know how the system works and is worried about approaching the government for services.
Anna and Sue agree to support Juanita by making the contact with the Ministry and attending meetings with her. Sue makes the call to the local Ministry office, but is told that unless she is making a specific report of child maltreatment, rules of confidentiality constrain the Ministry from discussing the specific service needs of a family without the parent’s consent. She is told that the mother will have to call herself. With a lot of support, Juanita makes the call and a meeting is arranged. Anna and Sue come to the meeting to provide support for the family.
The child and family services worker questions their presence at the meeting. She asks Juanita if it is all right with her that Anna and Sue are at the meeting. Juanita says she wants Anna and Sue at the meeting. After Juanita describes Marisol’s condition, and Anna and Sue offer their concerns and perspectives on what might be useful to Juanita and to Marisol, the child and family services worker points out that Anna and Sue may be in a conflict of interest. They are advocating for services for Juanita that would come from their programs under contract from the Ministry. The child and family services worker says that she will offer the family support and will do what she can to meet Marisol’s needs.
Juanita is frightened and confused. Anna and Sue promised to offer her support, but it now seems unclear whether they will have a continuing role. Anna and Sue are outraged that their advocacy on behalf of Juanita and Marisol is seen as a conflict of interest. They make an official complaint to the Ministry and ask that some protocols be developed to guide the involvement of natural advocates irrespective of any organizational affiliation.
You may want to consider the following:

- Taking the perspective of either Anna or Sue, defend your position on staying involved as a support to/advocate for Juanita.

You will identify a current social issue, which you will use throughout this semester to complete a few different assignments. For this first assignment, you will be submitting a six (6) page paper. The six (6) pages does not include the title page or reference page. The body of the paper includes all of the following:
Section One:
The Social Issue
(3 pages; 70 points)
(1 ½ pages) A description of the social issue you will address (gun violence, housing issues, substance abuse, mental health stigma, child hunger, sexual assault, etc.)
(¾ page) Statistics on the scope and magnitude of this social issue across the United States
(¾ page) Statistics on the scope and magnitude of this social issue in a community you are familiar with (if statistics are not found on a particular city/town, then use statistics for the county and/or the state as a point of reference).
Section Two:
Perceptions of the Issue
(2 pages; 70 points)
(1 page) An analysis of how this issue is being framed in the media and general public:
Identify news coverage on the issue, blogs, social media conversations and/or websites to discuss how the social issue is being framed by the media and general public:
Discuss exactly how the media and general public perceive the social issue (positives and negatives).
Discuss at least three (3) ways this perception of the media and general public on the social issue impacts those who experience the social issue.
(1 page) Results of interviews with at least five (5) community members about the social issue:
Interview at least five (5) members in the community about the social issue you are writing about. Specifically you will:
Based on your findings from Sections One & Two, write at least five (5) interview questions about the social issue and the community members’ perceptions of the social issue that you will be asking during an interview – you will provide the questions at the end of the paper as Appendix 1.
Discuss the similarities and differences in the answers among the community members you have interviewed – do not write a script of what was said but rather provide an analysis of what was similar and what was different about the answers you received.
Section Three:

Stakeholders

(1 page) Identify potential stakeholders most interested in this particular social issue
Based on your findings in Sections One & Two, discuss the stakeholders in your particular community:
Identify the primary stakeholders (those who are directly affected, either negatively or positively, by the social issue).
Identify the secondary stakeholders (those who are indirectly affected, either negatively or positively, by the social issue).
Identify the key stakeholders (those who belong to either or neither of the first two groups and can have a positive or negative effect on the social issue).

This assignment will focus on the application and analysis of developmental theories of childhood. This paper should be written correctly in APA style in paragraph/essay form with references. Length should be between 5-6 pages. However, the paper should NOT exceed 6 pages (not including the references and cover pages). You should have at least 5 SUPPORTING ARTICLES on your choices of theory and client issue in your references as well as any other sources used including the textbook and any website cited.
For this paper you will choose an issue with which a client might present. Some examples are: adolescent skipping school and experimenting with alcohol, a toddler refusing to potty train, a boy with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, A child adopted from an international orphanage at 9 years old, a physical or learning disability, a pre-teen girl with behavioral issues and fighting at school, etc. These are a few examples. Children and adolescents often experience anxiety and phobias related to many issues. It is natural for them to avoid their fears or escape a feared stimulus or situation. At times a child’s or adolescent’s fear might feel too big, and his or her skills or strength for dealing with the fear might feel too small. It becomes the clinician’s duty to help not only the child or adolescent but also the parents’ and guardians’ responsibility to engage in interventions for coping with their child’s or adolescent’s fears and phobias.
