A random sample is defined by the week one lecture as “members from the population are selected in such a way that each individual member has the same chance of being selected” (GCU, 2013). It is important for a sample to be random because of bias. If a survey or experiment is not random then the results are likely to have bias. While having a truly random sampling would lead to accurate results without bias.

However, truly random sampling is very hard to achieve, this is the main disadvantage to random sampling. It can be very expensive, time consuming, and require a lot of effort to obtain a truly random sample. The main problem is having the access to a large enough group of people that are unknown and unbiased. One possibility to resolve this would be to have a mass online survey where everyone has equal chance of being selected and responding to the survey.
