Your Assignment: Browse through the list of choices that follow here and settle on one that seems workable for you. Whichever choice you make, at least three outside scholarly sources must be referenced/cited. N.B. WIKIPEDIA is not a scholarly source. Term paper length will be six pages in total. (a) Pick a rite of passage observed in America (e.g., Sweet 16 or initiation to military service in boot camp). Interview someone who has experienced such a rite; record or otherwise take notes. Read pp. 324-28 in chapter thirteen. When you are sufficiently informed and have done some basic research and note taking, develop a paper that compares and contrasts the idea of rites/rituals in the modern world with ritual/s found among native, tribal people such as some discussed in our textbook. Since this is intended to be a researched, referenced paper, make sure to follow the directions for documenting sources provided by your instructor. You may quote from your interview notes. Do not identify your informant unless you have explicit permission to do so.

An alternative film here is “Bend it Like Beckham” from 2003. Here, the daughter of an orthodox Sikh family rebels against her parents’ traditionalism by running off to Germany with a football team.
