Management in a Dynamic Business Environment
Indiana Organ Procurement Organization (IOPO) operates in the healthcare market facilitating the gift of organ and tissue donation in cooperation with local and national transplant centers along with tissue processing agencies. Human organ and tissue donation is regulated by the Federal Drug Administration, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and American Association of Tissue Banks. Together they define and regulate almost all aspects of donation and how an Organ Procurement Organization or Tissue Bank operates.
In addition to outside regulations, IOPO maintains extensive internal policies and procedures that all employees are required to follow in order to facilitate IOPO’s mission of “Saving and Enhancing the quality of life though organ, tissue, and eye donation” (“About IOPO,” 2012) and IOPO’s vision “To create the most effective and influential donation and transplantation delivery model in health care.” (“About IOPO,” 2012).
IOPO’s dominate attribute would have to be that of rules and regulations as illustrated in the background above. The leadership style would fall into that of a coordinator due to leadership often working to coordinate the efforts of all to further IOPO’s mission and vision. The strategic emphasis would fall into two different styles; innovation and growth due to changes in healthcare and need for advancements in healthcare outcomes. The group culture would be that of Hierarchy due to the rules and regulations governing all aspects of donation.
Bateman, T.S., & Snell, S.A. (2013) describe a macro environment with continual changes in economy, technology, laws and regulations, demographics, social issues, and the natural environment causing businesses to adjust their outputs in order to adapt to changing markets. Therefore, I feel the competing values framework is a beneficial tool to analyze a company, but over time a company’s business environment may change causing a shift from one culture to another dependent on the macro environment.
