Korean grammar analysis paper

Homework 2:                          Grammar in discourse

Overview:

You will analyze the Korean the traditional Korean story “Beauty and the monk “for use of “the”=”은/는”and“This=이/가”, and write a report on your findings. Your report should apply the theories of “The” usage that we learned in class. The expected length of your report is around 1,000 words.

The report should display close analysis of the story, and evidence that you understand the functions of “This” and “The”that we discussed in class.

No additional library research is required; however, the report should be written in the style of an academic paper.

How to Analyze the Story:

Begin by counting the number of times that each of the characters in the story appears marked with ThisandThe. Create a table the same as or similar to the one shown below:

Character:This “/The “은/는”Particle used when mentioned for first time
Monk
Tiger
Beauty
other
TOTAL

Then, think about how these results relate to what you have learned about Thisand Thein class and in your library research. Look for interesting sentences that could work as examples of the patterns that you are finding. Also, are there any other patterns emerging in the data that are not captured in the table? If so, how can you include them in your analysis?

Report structure

Structure your report so that it includes the following sections:

  1. Introduction

Reviews the functions of Theand Thisthat we learned in class

States goals of the research

  1. Data Analysis

Present your table and describe the results. Use examples to illustrate the patterns you find.

  1. Discussion and Conclusion

Discuss how the results of your analysis compare with what we learned in class
