Essay
- Current Issues Presentation: Each student will be required to do a presentation of an article from the popular press regarding genes, genetic engineering, or genetic related technology. Articles are not limited to those on gene discovery, and may be about concepts related to genetics such as implications of genetic engineering, genetics and public policy, advances in genetic medicine, etc.. Articles must be from the past year (As of presentation date). Students are to prepare a 5-minute presentation about the article. Presentations should accomplish the following:
- Summarize the article for the class
- Identify the sources within the article. Is the article an editorial? Is the article based on findings reported in primary literature?
- What are the implications of the article? For example, if the article is about a newly discovered gene, what priority should further research on that gene be given? What could the discovery mean to the field of medicine?
