Chapter 12 discusses the many different aspects of family and household diversity.
1. One aspect discussed in this chapter is the newest trend of child-less couples, or couples that decide that they do not want to have children. Another aspect is remaining single, which is a clear departure from societal expectations; indeed, it has been likened to “being single on Noah’s Ark.” What would happen to our society if many more married couples suddenly decided not to have children? How would society change if cohabitation and/or singlehood became the norm?
2. The chapter discusses the different composition of family makeup (i.e. nuclear family, extended family, monogamy, etc.) and the definition of each. After reviewing all of the different compositions, what family do you most relate to, or have the most experience in your life? For example: you were raised by your extended family (as in grandparents took care of you); how did you feel? How did you benefit from this family dynamics? How did you suffer from this family dynamic?
3. What are your thoughts on polygamy, polygyny and polylandry? Do you agree with these compositions? What type of benefits do you see for men in this relationship? What type of benefits do you see for women in this relationship? What are the pitfalls for the women or men in this family composition?
4. The chapter discussed social class differences, as well as, racial and ethnic differences. What are your thoughts to social class lineage discussed in the chapter? What are your thoughts on racial and ethnic differences discussed in the chapter?
