Competencies Addressed in This Discussion

Ethics and Police Brutality Introduction

Law enforcement continues to be plagued by the historical problems of brutality and scandal. Police officers have been accused of lying in court, falsifying or withholding of evidence, gross mishandling of case investigations, corruption, racism, physical abuse and violence, and even murder. Sever major cases highlighting police misconduct occurred in rapid succession, which has had political fallout across the nation.

Highlighted cases of police brutality, scandal, and corruption, such as the Rodney King, Abner Louima, and Amadou Diallo cases, not only mar the reputation of specific police agencies involved, but also raise serious questions as to police accountability, autonomy, and ethics. As a result, many communities have experienced renewed tensions between the police and minority groups, especially in inner-city, low-income areas.

Police departments have responded by attempting to be more receptive to minority concerns, revamping their training and supervision to make abuses less likely, requiring violence reduction training and police ethics training, and moving to a community policing philosophy that emphasizes dispute resolution, mediation, and service orientation rather than order maintenance and arrest.
