COURSEWORK 2A (2018-19)
DESIGN OF THE STRUCTURAL STEELWORK COMPONENTS OF THE NEW OFFICE BUILDING FOR THE NEW CAMPUS
AnalternativelayoutfortheofficebuildinginCoursework1isbeingproposedutilisingabraced steelwork frame instead of RC. The change is to accommodate longer beam spans, in order to avoid internal columns, except around the atrium and service areas.
The plan area and building height are to be maintained at 56 by 44 and 23 m respectively. The atrium is to be 24 by 11 m on plan and extend to the roof.
The basement is to beomitted.Figure 1 ¾ Campus viewIn this project, you are required to carry out the following tasks and ensure your submission is exclusively your work even if there has been collaboration in the preparation of the work:
Provide sufficient drawings to show the steel frame structure, designed elements and key points. (15)Introduce design assumptions and indicate how the specification is satisfied, and give a method statement on the construction of the structure you have designed – not the site in general.
(15)Derive actions and resultant effects on a beam at the edge of the atrium and design it asan un-restrainedsteelbeam.Inadditiontotheusualfloorloadsassociatedwithyourplan,the beam should be designed to carry a full-heightpermanentpartition.

(10)Design the column base connection using the derived actions and resultant effects on the column inPart(d). (10)Design a bracing member for resistance to wind loading according to your own scheme from Coursework 1, between the foundation and Level 1. Indicate on your drawings a possible connection detail for the bracing.
Detailed design of the connection is not required. (20)Total marks[100]
