Culture, Advocacy, and Sexual Practices

Final Project: Culture, Advocacy, and Sexual Practices

Thank you to those who took time to respond to last week’s additional question about becoming a certified sex therapist.  The following website details that information.  It is quite an extensive process!

This course is extremely relevant in the face of so much media attention being given to sexual harassment and sexual abuse.  We’ve had the controversial #MetToo campaign which has opened up an opportunity for many survivors to share their stories.

And the Dr. Larry Nassar trial has received much attention in recent days.  Rachael Denhollander’s was the first woman to file a criminal complaint against Nassar, and her remarks have been incredible.  Judge Rosemarie Aquilina’s response has been incredible as well.  Perhaps you’ve seen her quote on social media:

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina

A former student of mine, Jessi Gold, at the University of Pennsylvania wrote the following article for Glamour magazine.  She’s the chief psychiatry resident at Stanford University. Take a look if you have a moment.

For this Project, discuss how you would address the practice of female genital mutilation with a family that believes in this practice. Research the underlying sexual beliefs of this practice and how you would address these views. Make sure you use the provided resources and your own search of the Walden Library to support your efforts of advocacy. Discuss the major barriers you believe exist in advocating for this practice to cease. How would you approach the barriers in order to try to remove them?

In a 4- to 6-page paper:

Present two to three strategies that you, as a helping professional, would implement if working with a family that supports this cultural practice.

Provide a rationale for the strategies you have chosen and how they relate to the underlying cultural beliefs and practices.

Summarize how you think helping professionals can help advocate for young girls within these cultures.
