The Story of an Hour

Using the short story “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, which you were assigned to read for this exam, construct a well-organized, clearly supported, unified, grammatically correct critical essay. Your essay must be at least 1 1/2 – 2 pages typed with a thesis statement and 4 or more in-text citations. You must have a Works Cited page.

Choose from one of the following topics:

1. The heart is a metaphorical symbol referring to love and marriage. Mrs. Mallard’s heart or her “marriage” is sick. Is her death the result of the loss of her new found freedom? Use evidence from the text and analyze.

2. Analyze the conflict within the story – Society vs. Mrs. Mallard or Mrs. Mallard vs. herself.

Use examples from the story to support your assertion.
