Stromberg, “The Formation of First Isaiah”

Response Paper #1: Stromberg, “The Formation of First Isaiah”

Our first Response Paper will focus on Stromberg’s presentation of Isaiah 1-39 and “The Formation of First Isaiah,” namely his Introduction and Chapter One of his book An Introduction to the Study of Isaiah.

Following Stromberg’s guidance, we have begun with the later layers of 1-39 and proceeded backwards in time, chronologically, toward the work of eighth-century Isaiah of Jerusalem. In the Introduction Stromberg offers a brief historical context for the Syro-Ephraimite war of 735 BCE, the fall of the northern kingdom in 722 BCE, and the invasion of Sennacherib in 701 BCE for the eighth-century Isaiah material.

What you will be asked to do for the Response Paper #1 is to formulate a topic addressing the issue of how one recognizes the authentic voice of eighth-century Isaiah from later material in the Book of Isaiah. Your essay will develop one theme using a text where 8th-century Isaiah’s voice is present and a text where 8th-century Isaiah’s voice is absent.

Approved Topics

1. “Identify and discuss one theme that enables a reader to differentiate eighth-century Isaiah from later material in the Book of Isaiah.” Begin by formulating a thesis that identifies what you personally believe prophets do, apart from Isaiah, or Stromberg, or any of our discussion—something you plan to teach your kids. Since you are the authority on what you personally believe, you do not have to prove your thesis. Once your personal stance is clarified, then move to evaluate two of the following text-groups: how you think eighth-century Isaiah did, using one selection of texts from each of the two groups below:

a) Isaiah 36-39, plus Isaiah 1;
b) Isaiah 6 minus “The holy seed is its stump”; or
c) Isaiah 7-8, The Syro-Ephraimite War

and then for the second text choose one of the following:
a) Isaiah 24-25:9; or
b) Isaiah 34-35.
