Critically evaluate the use of offender profiling techniques in a real world crime scene. To what extent do you believe it is possible to identify an offender on the basis of the evidence from the scene?
Create an annotated reference list (i.e. essay plan) comprising five articles related to the following essay question:
‘Critically evaluate the use of offender profiling techniques in a real world crime scene. To what extent do you believe it is possible to identify an offender on the basis of the evidence from the scene?’
Arrange the articles into an order that builds up a coherent argument.
Begin the list with the full reference to the article using the usual APA referencing format. Then, in a short paragraph beneath the reference give:
1. A brief summary (one sentence) of the purpose of the article (use the research questions, hypotheses or general theory being evaluated).
2. A brief summary of the most important conclusions for your essay (one or two sentences). This may differ for students depending on the argument they are building. For example, there may be several conclusions in the article but only one of these may be important for your essay. Therefore you don’t need to list all of the conclusions, just select the findings that are appropriate for your essay and ignore the others.
3. A brief evaluative summary of how this information will fit into your argument (one to three sentences). What do you intend to use this article for? Is it to introduce the topic? Is it to add weight to a particular part of the argument? Is it to compensate for a weakness in one of the other articles e.g. one may have been a lab study whereas this one may use a real life setting. This summary may state the strengths of the research but it could also highlight a problem with the topic area, perhaps it’s impossible to test some things in a real life setting for example. However, don’t ‘evaluate’ the articles by simply pointing out the weaknesses without identifying any strengths because that would be like saying that the argument in your essay will also be weak because it’s reflecting weak research.
Below is an example:
“Grubin, D., Kelly, P., Brunsdon, C., (2001) ‘Linking serious sexual assaults through behaviour’ Home Office Research Study 215, Home Office, London.
This study examines the extent to which behavioural consistency is a regular feature of serial sex offending and how this might be used to support the linking of crimes. Behavioural consistency over crime scenes was found for the way the offender controlled the victim and their method of escape, less consistency was found for sexual behaviour and personality. This research will enable me to establish the usefulness of the MO over the signature as a way of detecting an offender.”
So, to summarise, for each of the five articles, you include the full reference followed by a short paragraph consisting of 3-6 sentences covering the 3 points above. The maximum page limit for this assignment is 2 sides of A4.
