Topics for Out-of-Class Essay
Choose ONE of the following topics.
- Many fictional works feature flawed or ignorant characters who redeem themselves through learning from their mistake. Compare and/or contrast Edie from “How I Met My Husband” to the narrator from “Cathedral.” (Hint questions: How or why are they flawed or ignorant? What triggers any changes in their characters? How do we know they are more experienced and insightful by the end of the story?)
- Compare the use of horror and/or violence in “SredniVashtar” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” (Hint: Think about how setting, characterization, plot twists, etc. contribute to the horror and/or violence.)
Refer to at least two secondary sources. You may quote, paraphrase or do both.
- Include a bibliography at the end of your paper that follows MLA guidelines.(http://library.senecacollege.ca/Research_Help/Citing_Sources/index.html)
- Use standard sized, white paper only.
- Use a 12 pt. font (Times New Roman or Calibri are recommended.)
- Double space your work.
- It is recommended that you use a word processor, but if you write your paper by hand, use dark blue or black ink.
- Do NOT put your work in a folder or envelop.
- Include your name, section, my name and the date either on a separate title page or in the top left hand corner of the first page.
- Your paper should be approximately 800-900 words long.
- Do not copy or plagiarize! You will receive a mark of zero if you are caught with no opportunity to redo the assignment.
