Myth and futures

We noticed in our study of creation myths that those tell us where we came from. They also provide us an indication of where we are going or what we hope the future holds. This is referred to as a group’s eschatology. Often, it is a kind of return to that original creation after a period of destruction, but in other instances, it is a new situation or world altogether. We will explore this dynamic in relation to Norse myths this week.

  1. Choose one Norse myth from the Learning Resources and identify elements in the myth that relate to the future.
  2. Correlate the hopes and fears for the future of the Norse people that are suggested by the story with actual cultural circumstances or historical events. In other words, discuss: What is there to hope for in the future? What is there to fear in the future? Discuss the the vision of the future in it, using the Learning Resources.
