Module 2/ 2nd assignment Assignment Suggestions

For full instructions about how to register for the Diet Analysis. YOU DO NOT NEED ANY CODE FROM ME. If you have a used or ebook you will need to buy just a 1 semester code directly from Cenage.

The DAP written assignment for this module takes the form of three “Multi-Part Written Assignments,” all due at the close of the module.

You will first record THREE complete days of your food and beverage intake and enter everything you eat online with the “Diet Analysis Plus” (DAP) site. The Pre-Term area of the course has a folder with step by step instructions. If you are have questions about the DAP, please consult this first.

DO NOT record any nutrient supplements you take. It will be interesting to discover whether your food choices alone deliver the nutrients you need. If you do not include your supplement intake, you will know better after completing your dietary analysis which supplements to choose.

Next, print out the results of your dietary analysis. THERE ARE SEVERAL USEFUL REPORTS that show various perspectives of your intake.  You will need the INTAKE VS GOAL REPORT. BE SURE TO ENTER ALL 3 CALENDAR DATES IN THE HEADING TO GET THE AVERAGE.  You will use this information (data) to complete the Written Assignments in this Module (Carbohydrate Intake, Fat Intake and Protein Intake) and in Module 4 (Vitamin Intake and Mineral Intake). YOU WILL BE USING A 3 DAY AVERAGE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS IN THESE MODULES, NOT A 1 DAY CALCULATION. An average will provide a more realistic view of your diet.

Finally, answer all questions (in this module, or any other) that require you to do calculations. Be sure to click open the full set of questions in each section.   SHOW ALL OF YOUR CALCULATIONS AND SHOW UNITS AFTER EVERY NUMBER. I can’t help you if I can’t see your data and calculations.  SHOW ALL WORK!

Each nutrient assignment will provide sample calculations. The INTAKE VS GOAL REPORT will provide you with your average results ( middle column) vs your Goals ( first column).

Some Things to Consider

Since you will be tracking a THREE DAY dietary intake, it may be helpful to record your information on a separate piece of paper and transfer this data into the Diet Analysis Plus website form. In addition to recording the type of foods you eat, you will also record the amount consumed. Make careful note and estimate to the nearest ounce, quarter cup, tablespoon, or other common measure. You may find Appendix C in your text to provide helpful conversion factors. Here are some helpful tricks for estimating serving sizes: As a general rule, a piece of meat that is the size of the palm of a woman’s hand or deck of cards is about 3 ounces. Also, a serving of vegetables or fruit that is the size of a tennis ball is about a half cup. More information for estimating serving sizes can be found on page 48- 49 (left column in green print) and Appendix D of the text.

You may have to break down mixed dishes to their ingredients. However, many mixed dishes, including fast foods are listed in the DAP database as well as in Appendix A of the text.

Keep in mind, you will (of course) make errors in estimating amounts. In calculations of this kind, errors of up to 20 percent are common. Still, you will have a rough approximation that will enable you to compare your nutrient intakes with the recommended ones. DO NOT record any nutritional supplements you take. It will be interesting to discover whether your food choices alone deliver the nutrients you need. If you do not include your supplement intake, you will know better after completing your dietary analysis which supplements to choose.
