Final Paper titles for G130 Global Economy and Development – Fall 2017, Assignment help
For your final paper you need to answer ONE of the following questions. Your paper should not exceed
2,500 words – with 10% flexibility. The expectation is that you will use the Reader as well other
recommended books as background reading. It is also recommend that you use a minimum of 6
sources, including at least two sources from your own research on the topic chosen. For your
background research use books and/or Journal articles only. Avoid using highly unreliable Internet
sources such as Wikipedia or other unattributed sources.
Choose ONE of the following:
1. Pick a country of your choice (preferably from the developing world) and critically assess its
economic and human development record since the 1980s, paying specific attention to its
economic and social achievements, its chosen trade and investment strategies and progress
on gender and income equalities.
[You are expected to demonstrate knowledge of different development indicators to assess
economic and social progress. Then an attempt needs to be made to relate the impacts of
different development policies on them. The words critically assess are important and you will
be expected to consider both achievements as well as failures before forming a judgement]
2. Given that some critics of transnational corporations (through their FDI and GVCs) point to
the many negative impacts they can have on developing countries, do you think
governments of the developing world should stop attracting transnational investments into
their countries?
[This question is asking you to identify, explain and evaluate the actual or potential costs AND
benefits associated with ways transnationals operate in developing countries. To gain a high
grade you will need to use appropriate examples and arguments which are supported with
appropriate evidence/examples and then come to a reasoned judgement on the latter part of
the question]
3. The global trading system has been in a state of flux since the collapse of the Doha Round
of trade talks. Write a critical commentary on how you think the global trading system is
evolving and whether it is likely to emerge as a fair system which helps the global economy
to grow.
[The first part of the question is a statement and you need to unpick it. You will explain your
understanding of the structure of the global trading system and its different components and
then go on to briefly explain in what sense can Doha Round be considered a failure and why.
The second part asks you to consider recent trends in global trade and what they tell us about
the evolving system. The last part of the question asks you to make a judgement about
whether the current system or the way it may evolve in the next decade is likely to be “fair”
to all countries who participate in it. You may want to use example to support your judgement]
**Final paper will need to be uploaded onto the G130 course web on GauchoSpace before
