Formal Analysis for Art

Choose a work of art in your home (you may choose to develop your previous choice of a work of art that is personal and private to you, but in this assignment, you will avoid 1st person in order to maintain an objective point of view (not subjective).

Describe and analyze the work of art in a strict formal analysis (cite no outside sources for this assignment-only a visual, formal analysis is required here). Describe the work in detail, telling the reader how formal elements such as line, shape, space, color, light, texture, motion, etc. are arranged in composition through the use of design principles (balance, symmetry, repetition, proportion, rhythm, etc.) Use your notes and the vocabulary terms in Chapters 1-7 (Formal Elements and Principles of Design.)

Papers should be 500-600 words in length (no more, no less). Papers must be written in 12 point, standard academic font, double spaced, with standard margins. Papers should also be free of spelling and grammatical errors; although an online submission, this is an academic paper. Be sure to submit a clear image of the work in question, and pay attention to the following:

1.Titles of works of art are written in italics to distinguish them as such; Michelangelo’s David

2.Academic writing requires the use of third person singular (he, she, the monument) Avoid the use of first person (I) and second (you) person (this requires an objective, not subjective point of view)

3.Stay in formal academic prose throughout.
Do not use colloquial (vernacular) language and avoid shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd person.

4.Indent the first line of each paragraph (5 spaces) to denote a new paragraph.

5.Make sure that the image submitted is clear.
