Cognitive impairment in the elderly

A 74 year old man is admitted to the psychiatric ward for age assessment of an incipient cognitive impairment.

Tasks:

2. The patient’s condition deteriorates after admission, he becomes increasingly confused with anxiety, periodically with externalizing behaviors. Describe the nurse’s observations, assessments and measures to safeguard the patient’s basic needs in relation to cognitive decline

3. The patient eventually calms down and functions better in the department. The report concluded with a mild cognitive impairment. The patient will be discharged and sent home. Discuss how the nurse can arrange for a proper follow-up of the patient in-home, and guide the patient to cope with their situation at home.
