City Commission Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is for you to see and understand how local government operates in the state of Texas, what local government is responsible for, and it is for you to see how you can participate in local government.

Attend a meeting of the city commission (called a city council in most municipalities in Texas). You may use any city in the state of Texas, but for your convenience, the city of McAllen posts video archives of its commission meetings at and you may use any meeting that occurred within the past three (3) months. Other cities in the state also have archives of their city council meetings.

Write a short summary (4-6 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font, exclusive of any cover sheets you may choose to include or endnotes you include) of the meeting you watched and your reactions to it. Include analysis of some of the key points of the discussion during the meeting you attended.

Do NOT simply copy the agenda. Do NOT “list” topics covered. This should be an integrated paper that flows. Your observations and analysis should be included with each point, and you should summarize the meeting and your reactions at the conclusion of your paper.

The assignment should be submitted as an MS Word document (.doc or .docx file) attached to the appropriate place in the assignment drop box. Documents produced by other word processors are not viewable on my computers and will not be graded. If you do not have access to MS Word at home, the computer labs at STC has it available for your use.

Disclosure about the above assignment: Do not expect an A for a minimum-length paper. Minimal length will not be reached until at least 4 full pages have been completed. Do not use tricks of trying to enlarge the font or margins or spacing between the lines, etc. Follow the guidelines above. These length requirements are set in order to give you ample room to accomplish the appointed task. You cannot accomplish what is asked in an adequate manner in less space.
